What is Cali weed?

"Cali weed" originally refers to cannabis strains from California, the US state with one of the oldest and most developed cannabis cultures worldwide. Since legalisation in California (2016), regulated cultivation and quality standards have developed there. On the German market, the term is often used for imported goods from the USA or for cannabis that is advertised as being of particularly good quality.

Origin and meaning

The problem with "Cali weed" on the German market

On the German black market, the term "Cali weed" is often used as a marketing term without the product actually coming from California or meeting the corresponding quality standards. Without laboratory analysis, there is no way to verify THC content, purity or origin. This is a considerable risk for consumers.

Legal situation in Germany

In Germany, cannabis containing THC is regulated by the Consumer Cannabis Act (KCanG) and the Medical Cannabis Act (MedCanG). The KCanG only allows adults to possess certain quantities and to obtain cannabis through cultivation associations (cannabis social clubs). Medical cannabis is only available with a doctor's prescription. Purchase and sale outside this framework remain punishable offences.
